About Sajal Dutta
Mr. Sajal Dutta, a distinguished entrepreneur and visionary in healthcare, has been instrumental in transforming the medical landscape of Eastern India. A Mechanical Engineer from Jadavpur University, one of India's topmost tech schools (1978), and an MBA from Indian Institute of Management Calcutta, among India's oldest and best B-Schools (1980), his professional journey began with XL Enterprises Limited – an export house of premium leather products to globally renowned brands. The company earned the National Award for Export Excellence in 1993 and 1994.
Mr. Dutta entered the healthcare sector in the late 1990s, serving as Managing Director of one of Kolkata's early private hospitals. In 2006, he founded Desun Hospital, which under his leadership has grown into one of the region's leading multi-specialty healthcare providers. Desun is known for delivering world-class treatment while actively promoting social welfare through initiatives such as the Desun Health City Foundation.
In addition to his contributions to healthcare, he also leads Devyam, a pharmaceutical venture focused on producing quality-assured drugs and nutraceuticals.
Early Life & Career
Before entering the healthcare sector, Sajal Dutta established himself as a successful industrialist. He began his career with XL Enterprises Limited, a premium leather goods export house, supplying to global high-street brands. Under his leadership, the company achieved significant recognition, including the National Award for Export Excellence in 1993 and 1994. This early phase of his career was instrumental in shaping his business philosophy, focused on quality, efficiency, and global standards, principles he later translated into healthcare delivery.
Stepping into Healthcare
In the late 1990s, Dutta shifted his focus toward healthcare, recognizing the urgent need for high-quality, affordable medical services in Eastern India. He served as Managing Director of one of Kolkata's early private hospitals, gaining firsthand experience in hospital administration and patient care systems. This exposure laid the groundwork for his most ambitious venture building a world-class healthcare institution from the ground up.
Mr Dutta founded Desun Hospital in 2008, marking a significant milestone in Eastern India's healthcare evolution. From its inception, Desun was envisioned as a patient-centric, technology-driven, and cost-effective healthcare provider. Over the years, it has grown to a 700 bed quaternary hospital, achieving JCI, NABH and NABL accreditation, with facilities in Kolkata and 300 bed hospital in Siliguri.
